Biography

Sandra Behren is a postdoctoral fellow in Mikael Elofsson's group at the Department of Chemistry, Umeå University. Her research focuses on the synthesis of antiviral small molecules and glycoconjugates. She completed her PhD in Organic Chemistry at Umeå University in 2021, where she worked in Professor Ulrika Westerlind's group. During her doctoral studies, she developed tools to study the interactions between bacteria and the host mucin O-glycome at the molecular level using glycopeptide microarrays. Currently, her research aims to generate inhibitors of viruses that bind to carbohydrates, specifically N-acetylneuraminic acid, on host cells, which facilitates viral attachment and subsequent infection.
