Dr. Sandra Bell

Biography

Sandra Bell is a Professor in the discipline of English at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, where she has been a faculty member since 2000. She teaches lower-level courses such as Poetry and Drama, as well as higher-level courses focusing on sixteenth and seventeenth-century literature, with specializations in drama courses on Script Performance, Beckett, and Contemporary Drama, and specific courses on Shakespeare pedagogy. Sandra takes students to London as part of UNB's Travel Study program, connecting them with local theatre teaching communities to provide practical learning experiences. Sandra has received several awards for her excellence in teaching, including the Allan P. Stuart Award in 2006, the University Teaching Scholar designation from 2009 to 2012, the Neil Scott Instructional Leadership Award, the Change Thing Award in 2016, and the Teaching Innovation Award in 2018. In the 2020-2021 academic year, she won the Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching and was the recipient of the Atlantic Association of Universities' Distinguished Teaching Award in 2022. Sandra has published and presented works on James VI of Scotland, England, and his mother, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. She has contributed to an anthology of sixteenth-century prose and verse published by Broadview Press and has actively engaged in Shakespeare pedagogy workshops. In addition to her academic contributions, Sandra is involved in the Saint John theatre community, having written, directed, and acted in numerous plays, and was instrumental in establishing the Fundy FRINGE Festival in 2013, for which she received the 2017 Originals Arts Award for Performing Arts (Theatre).
