Dr. Sandra Fredman

Biography

Sandra Fredman is a Professor of Law at the University of Oxford and a professorial fellow at Pembroke College, Oxford. She was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2005 and became a Queen's Counsel (honoris causa) in 2012. Known for her extensive contributions to anti-discrimination law, human rights law, and labour law, she has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and authored several monographs, including 'Comparative Human Rights' (OUP, 2018), 'Human Rights Transformed' (OUP, 2008), 'Discrimination Law' (2nd ed, OUP, 2011), and 'Women and Law' (OUP, 1997). Additionally, she has co-authored works such as 'State and Employer' (Mansell, 1988) and 'Labour Law and Industrial Relations in Great Britain' (2nd ed, Kluwer, 1992). Her editorial contributions include the volumes 'Human Rights and Equality in Education' (Policy Press, 2018) and 'Discrimination and Human Rights: Case Studies on Racism' (OUP, 2001). In 2004, she was awarded the Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship for her research on socio-economic rights and substantive equality. She holds degrees from the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Oxford and has worked as an expert adviser in equality law and labour legislation across various countries including the EU, UK, India, South Africa, Canada, and Malaysia. She is also a practicing barrister at Old Square Chambers and founded the Oxford Human Rights Hub in 2012, where she serves as Director.
