Dr. Sandra Gunning

Biography

Sandra Gunning is the Arthur F Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan's Department of English Language and Literature. Her research interests include American Studies, focusing particularly on 19th and 20th-century American literature, African American literature, and African diaspora studies. Gunning employs interdisciplinary approaches to literature and intersects her research with feminism and gender studies. She has also explored the genre of travel writing, making significant contributions to the understanding of its role in literature. Gunning earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991 and has since been a prominent figure in the field, known for her expertise in the intersections of race and literature.
