Sandra Heskamp studied Biomedical Sciences at Radboud University Nijmegen. In 2009, she graduated with a master's degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Human Pathobiology. She began her PhD project in Molecular Imaging of Receptor Tyrosine Kinases in Cancer, a collaborative effort with the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Medical Oncology. During her PhD, she participated in a European consortium under the Innovative Medicines Initiative, investigating the potential of diffusion weighted MRI and [18F] FLT as early biomarkers for treatment response in cancer. Additionally, she worked as a visiting researcher at the Technical University of Munich, focusing on alpha-emitting radionuclides for cancer treatment. After obtaining her PhD in June 2014, she continued as a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Medical Imaging at Radboudumc. She leads her own research group dedicated to nuclear imaging therapy in immuno-oncology, collaborating with scientists to develop novel radiotracers that visualize tumor cells and their immune microenvironment, and studying the biological effects of radiation on tumor cells and the immune microenvironment. Her work aims at specifically delivering high doses of radiation to tumors using therapeutic radionuclides.
