Dr. Sandra Hodgetts

Biography

Sandra Hodgetts is a Professor and Interim Chair in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, specializing in Occupational Therapy. Her research interests focus on autism, social participation, intervention strategies, and self-determination. She has directed the Supporting Kids Inclusion Participation (SKIP) Lab, where she collaborates with staff and trainees to conduct impactful research aimed at enhancing the inclusion and participation of children and young adults with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities. Hodgetts has extensive clinical experience as an occupational therapist, working with children and families in various settings, and has a commitment to improving practices within occupational therapy by promoting neuro-diversity-affirming approaches. Active in research, she is involved in multiple ongoing projects ranging from understanding belonging in autistic post-secondary students to evaluating child-oriented goal-setting in pediatric rehabilitation. Hodgetts has also contributed to academic literature with publications on autism education interventions and diagnostic disclosure, advocating for the needs of autistic individuals through her research outcomes and teaching.
