Dr. Sandra Wachter

Biography

Professor Sandra Wachter is a Professor of Technology Regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, where she researches the legal and ethical implications of artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, and Internet platform regulation. Her current research focuses on profiling, inferential analytics, explainable AI, algorithmic bias, diversity, fairness, governmental surveillance, predictive policing, and human rights online. Professor Wachter leads and coordinates the Governance Emerging Technologies Research Programme at OII, which investigates the legal, ethical, and technical aspects of AI and machine learning. She has affiliations with several institutions, including the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the World Economic Forum’s Global Futures Council on Values, Ethics, and Innovation. As a policy advisor, she advises governments, companies, and NGOs on regulatory and ethical questions related to emerging technologies. She has received numerous awards, including the O2RB Excellence Impact Award and is active in developing ethical auditing methods and standards for AI to combat bias and discrimination. Her work has been featured in major media outlets, and she has contributed significantly to the governance of AI ethics.
