Biography

Patjanaporn "Sang" Chalacheva is an Associate Teaching Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. She received her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Southern California. Dr. Chalacheva continued her academic career at USC, collaborating with Children's Hospital Los Angeles as a postdoctoral research associate under the supervision of Dr. Michael C.K. Khoo and Dr. Thomas Coates in Hematology. Her research focuses on computational modeling of cardiovascular autonomic control, particularly in relation to sickle cell disease and sleep-related breathing disorders. Notably, sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder characterized by painful vaso-occlusive crises due to the obstruction of blood flow caused by sickled red blood cells. Dr. Chalacheva's work employs computational models to analyze non-invasive measurements in humans to understand the contributions of the autonomic nervous system to the genesis of these crises, with applications extending to sleep disorders and metabolic syndrome.
