Dr. Sanjay Kalra

Biography

Dr. Sanjay Kalra is a Professor and holds the Henri M. Toupin Chair in Neurological Sciences at the University of Alberta. He specializes in the study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and oversees the Canadian ALS Neuroimaging Consortium (CALSNIC). His research concentrates on neuroimaging biomarkers associated with neurodegeneration, particularly within the context of ALS. He has contributed significantly to the field through numerous publications that address the complexities of neuroimaging in ALS patients and the relationships between structural brain changes and clinical outcomes. Dr. Kalra's work integrates advanced MRI techniques, including diffusion tensor imaging and functional MRI, to better understand neurodegenerative processes. He has played a pivotal role in developing diagnostic tools aimed at enhancing the understanding and management of ALS. As an adjunct professor in both the Department of Computing Science and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, he fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to advance research in neuroscience. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto and a fellowship at the Montreal Neurological Institute.
