Biography

Sanjay Ruparelia is a Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Toronto Metropolitan University, holding the Jarislowsky Democracy Chair. He earned his PhD in Politics from the University of Cambridge and previously completed his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at McGill University and a Master of Philosophy in Sociology, Politics, and Development at the University of Cambridge. Prior to his current role, Dr. Ruparelia served as an Associate Professor of Politics at the New School for Social Research and as an assistant director at the South Asia Institute. He has also lectured at Columbia University and worked as a consultant for the United Nations. His research focuses on issues of democracy, equality, and development in the postcolonial context, analyzing the roles of political parties, movements, and institutions. He is currently working on book manuscripts, including a study on law, citizenship, and accountability in India, while comparing India’s trajectory with similar developments in China, South Africa, and Brazil, as part of a broader inquiry into political accountability and welfare in the evolving global order.
