Biography

Sanjit Mitra received his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics from Utkal University, India in 1953 and M.Sc. (Tech.) degree in Radio Physics & Electronics from the University of Calcutta, India in 1958. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1962. With a career spanning over several decades, Dr. Mitra published more than 640 papers in the fields of analog and digital signal processing, image processing, and authored or co-authored twelve books. A significant contributor to the IEEE, he served as President of the IEEE Circuits & Systems Society in 1986 and has held visiting appointments at various prestigious institutions across multiple countries. He is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the F.E. Terman Award and the IEEE Millennium Medal. Dr. Mitra has also been recognized with Honorary Doctorate degrees from several universities and is a Fellow of IEEE, AAAS, and SPIE, among other memberships in various academies. His research interests are focused on digital signal processing, image and video processing, data compression, and mixed analog-digital signal processing.
