Dr. Sankaran Iyer

Biography

Sankaran Iyer is a Senior Research Associate at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), specializing in Deep Learning and Computer Vision, with a focus on Object Detection and Tracking, particularly in pedestrian detection. He earned his PhD in Computer Science in 2023, researching Vertebral Compression Fracture Detection through a Novel 3D Localization Algorithm. His Master's degree in Computer Science was obtained from UNSW in 1994, where he concentrated on detecting Latin characters using artificial neural networks. With 30 years of industry experience, Iyer has contributed to significant projects in real-time embedded systems and intelligent networks, having formerly served as a senior project manager at Nokia/Alcatel Lucent. His collaborative work includes developing pest detection systems with the Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences group at UNSW and creating an Android application for wildlife species detection as part of the Bushfire Recovery program. Currently, he collaborates with the Black Dog Institute on people behavior analysis aimed at suicide detection prevention in various public settings. Iyer is also involved in supervising PhD students and guiding Master of Information Science students in model building using deep learning platforms such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
