Biography

Sara Ghebremusse specializes in mining governance, law development, African legal studies, and human rights. She believes in the law’s transformative potential in the fight against global poverty. With prior positions in the City of Toronto Legal Services Division and the College of Midwives of Alberta, she has published on natural resource governance and development human rights, and has presented her research at conferences across Canada, Mexico, and Africa. After realizing her passion for teaching while working as a Teaching Assistant during her PhD at Osgoode Hall Law School, Ghebremusse was inspired by the few Black women faculty she encountered, making pursuing a career as a professor seem a worthwhile pursuit. At Allard Law, she enjoys teaching international legal topics and has coached the law school’s Jessup team. She focuses on the real-world implications of studying international law for Canadian law students, emphasizing the changing dynamics of law practice and its relevance as Canada’s lawyers engage in increasingly cross-border issues. Her academic work closely relates to mining governance, particularly as 60 percent of mining companies operating in Africa are Canadian. Research areas include transparency, corporate accountability, community rights, and the role of mining in green technology and climate change.
