Biography

Sara Jackrel received her Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolution from the University of Chicago and subsequently became a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan. In 2020, she joined the faculty of Ecology, Behavior and Evolution at the University of California, San Diego. Her research in the Jackrel lab focuses on understanding how biological diversity at multiple scales influences ecosystem functions. She investigates the relationships between intraspecific variation, plasticity, and genetic diversity, particularly concerning their impacts on host-associated bacteria. Jackrel's work is particularly centered on plants, phytoplankton, and associated microbiomes, aiming to understand their roles in regulating carbon cycles in lake, river, and riparian ecosystems. Through empirical experiments and microbial genomics, she seeks to make predictions about ecosystem functions in the context of global change.
