Biography

Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot is a sociologist and the Emily Hargroves Fisher Research Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, focusing on the culture of schools and the broader ecology of education. Over her career, she has authored ten influential books, including "Worlds Apart: Relationships, Families, Schools" and "Good High School: Portraits, Character, Culture," the latter earning her the Outstanding Book Award from the American Educational Research Association in 1984. Her work examines the relationship between human development and social change through a unique blend of aesthetic and empirical methodologies. Some of her notable awards include the prestigious MacArthur Prize in 1984 and the George Ledlie Prize in 1993. Lawrence-Lightfoot's educational influence is further highlighted by her 28 honorary degrees from institutions across the United States and Canada. She has also held esteemed titles such as Spencer Senior Scholar and Margaret Mead Fellow within the Academy of Political and Social Sciences. In recognition of her contribution to education, the endowed professorship at Swarthmore College was established in her name, marking a historic achievement as she became the first African-American woman to hold an endowed professorship at Harvard.
