Dr. Sara Lomonaco

Biography

Sara Lomonaco is an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Food Science at Pennsylvania State University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Torino, Italy, where she specialized in Veterinary Sciences with a focus on Veterinary Biotechnology. Lomonaco's primary research interests lie in the investigation and understanding of the diversity and distribution of pathogenic bacteria. She focuses on the development and application of novel molecular subtyping methods to track and analyze pathogenic microorganisms, particularly Listeria monocytogenes and various strains of E. coli and Salmonella. Her work also addresses the prevalence of these bacteria in food production environments and aims to identify persistent strains to develop effective control strategies. Lomonaco has made significant contributions to the field through numerous peer-reviewed publications, highlighting her research on food safety and microbial contamination in agricultural settings. In addition to her research, she teaches courses related to food safety, biotechnology, and microbiology. With a commitment to improving food safety and quality, her current research funding focuses on projects that enhance nutritional quality and sustainability within the dairy industry, among others.
