S. Sara Monoson is a political theorist at Northwestern University. Her research interests include Greek political theory, historical context, and classical reception studies, particularly the history of adaptations of Greek sources and ideas in American political discourse, including themes such as abolition, free speech, the Cold War, civil rights, and veterans’ affairs. She is the author of "Plato’s Democratic Entanglements: Athenian Politics in Practice Philosophy" (Princeton 2000) and numerous articles and essays. Her work includes an exploration of Plato’s account of Socrates’ military service in light of contemporary understandings of war trauma and PTSD. Currently, she is engaged in a book project, "Socrates’ Vernacular," which examines Socrates' presence in various 20th and 21st century popular media. Monoson also directs the Classicizing Chicago Project, which is a digital archive that investigates how thoughts from classical antiquity inform expressions of Chicago’s unique identity as an American global metropolis. A native New Yorker, she has lived in Evanston, Illinois for twenty years, with her husband Michael Berns, an architect and photographer, and their son Alexander, an art student at the Pratt Institute.
