Biography

Sara Morgan is an Associate Professor of Public Health at the University of Southampton, where she focuses on health inequalities, violence prevention, and social epidemiology. Her research is driven by a desire to understand and improve the causes and consequences of health inequalities from childhood to early adulthood. She aims to close the 'evidence gap' in the design of intervention programs, particularly those that promote knowledge exchange with community partners. Morgan utilizes both quantitative and qualitative approaches, working both in the UK and internationally to address health inequalities and tackle the wider determinants of health, especially those affected by violence and crime. She has experience in designing and delivering randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and realist longitudinal methods, and has earned over £10 million in research grants, serving as a Chief Investigator for £1 million in various projects funded by notable institutions such as the National Institute for Health Research and the Economic and Social Research Council. Morgan leads a team of public health advisors, generating high-quality research evidence to inform decisions on interventions aimed at improving population health. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the Faculty of Medicine, focusing on qualitative methodology, mixed methods, global health, and the evaluation of complex interventions for violence prevention. Morgan also supervises PhD students and has previously worked as a program manager on donor-funded initiatives in Sri Lanka. Her contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards, including the Best Early Career Researcher award from NIHR and PHE in 2020.
