Biography

Sara Rockwell received her B.S. in Physics from Penn State University in 1965 and her Ph.D. in Biophysics from Stanford University in 1971. She completed postdoctoral training as a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford and later worked at the Institut Gustave Roussy in France. In 1974, she joined the faculty of the Yale University School of Medicine, where she currently holds the position of Professor Emeritus in Therapeutic Radiology. Professor Rockwell’s teaching experience includes radiation biology, pharmacology, cancer biology, ethics, and career development skills. Her research primarily focuses on studying the microenvironments of solid tumors and their effects on cancer treatment, including the response of malignant cells to hypoxia and interaction with radiation and chemotherapeutic agents. She has published over 200 scientific publications and presented at over 250 national and international meetings. Notably, she has received numerous awards for her educational and research efforts, including being elected as a Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology. Dr. Rockwell has served on various advisory panels for governmental agencies and has held significant roles within the Yale community, including Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs.
