Sara Salem is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the London School of Economics. Her research interests include postcolonial studies, Marxist theory, global histories, and anticolonialism. She focuses on connections between postcolonial theory and Marxism, with special attention to the context of Egypt during the period of decolonization in the mid-twentieth century. Particularly, she investigates questions involving anticolonial archives, traveling theory, and the afterlives of entanglements with empire in the Middle East. Sara co-directs projects such as 'Disembodied Territories', along with Menna Agha, and 'Archive Stories' with Mai Taha. Her book, 'Anticolonial Afterlives in Egypt: Politics and Hegemony', published by Cambridge University Press in 2020, analyzes the afterlives of Egypt's moment of decolonization and engages with the works of theorists such as Antonio Gramsci and Frantz Fanon, addressing critical issues of anticolonialism, resistance, and liberation. Currently, she is working on another book project tentatively titled 'Anticolonial Archives', which will explore the tensions embedded in archiving anticolonial pasts for the present and future. Additionally, Sara teaches the MSc Human Rights Politics program and is involved in supervising PhD projects related to her areas of expertise.
