Biography

Sara Seager is the Class of 1941 Professor of Planetary Science and a Professor of Physics and Aeronautics/Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her past research laid the foundation for the field of exoplanet atmospheres, and her current work focuses on the exploration of exoplanet atmospheres and the search for signs of life through atmospheric biosignature gases. Professor Seager is deeply involved in several space-based exoplanet missions, serving as the Deputy Science Director for the MIT-led NASA mission TESS, and as the Principal Investigator on the JPL/MIT CubeSat ASTERIA. She also leads the Starshade Rendezvous Mission, a space-based mission concept aimed at direct imaging and characterizing Earth-like exoplanets. Before joining MIT in 2007, she was a senior research staff member at the Carnegie Institution for Science and previously worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. She holds a PhD from Harvard University and a BSc from the University of Toronto. Seager is a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2013 and a MacArthur Fellow.
