Biography

Sarah Ashwin is a sociologist specializing in industrial relations and the intersection of gender and work. She is currently the Head of the Department of Management at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Sarah graduated with first-class honours in History from Oxford and obtained an MSc in Russian Government and Politics from LSE. Her doctoral research, conducted at the University of Warwick, focused on the organization of workers during Russia's political and economic transformation in the 1990s. Her subsequent publications explored the responses of Russian workers to economic collapse and the strategies of Russian trade unions to adapt to a new environment. Her interest in the experiences of women workers has led her to develop research themes centered on the (post) Soviet gender order and the implications for women's employment and the gender division of domestic labour. Sarah continues to engage in research examining aspects of gender theory and Russia’s stalled gender revolution, including analyses of gender differences in well-being related to pensioner employment. Her gender research has been published in leading journals, earning nominations for the prestigious Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research. Recently, her work has focused on the governance of global supply chains in the garment industry, exploring corporate social responsibility and transnational industrial relations agreements, culminating in recognition with the 2021 James G. Scoville International/Comparative Industrial Relations Paper Award.
