Biography

Sarah Ashwin is a prominent sociologist specializing in industrial relations, international labor standards, corporate social responsibility, and gender issues related to work. She is currently the Head of the Department of Management at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Sarah completed her undergraduate degree in History at the University of Oxford, graduating with class honors, and earned an MSc in Russian Government and Politics from LSE. Her doctoral research at the University of Warwick examined worker organization in the context of Russia's political and economic transformation during the 1990s. Sarah's subsequent publications have focused on the responses of Russian workers to economic collapse and the attempts of Russian trade unions to adapt to a new environment. Her interest in the experiences of women workers has led to a significant theme of her research addressing the (post) Soviet gender order and the implications for women's employment and the gender division of domestic labor. Recently, her work has analyzed gender differences in well-being related to pensioner employment and has been published in prominent journals such as the American Journal of Sociology and Gender & Society. Sarah's research has received nominations for the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research. Her latest research stream examines global supply chain governance within the garment industry, highlighting issues of corporate social responsibility and transnational industrial relations agreements, culminating in a notable article that won the 2021 James G. Scoville International/Comparative Industrial Relations Paper Award.
