Biography

Sarah Phillips Casteel is a Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Carleton University. She holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto and both an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. Her research interests focus on Black Jewish diaspora literature, culture, global Holocaust studies, memory studies, and Caribbean hemispheric American studies. She is a founding member of the Centre for Transnational Cultural Analysis and is cross-appointed at the Institute of Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture and the Institute of African Studies at Carleton. Casteel's recent book, 'Black Lives Under Nazism: Making History Visible in Literature and Art,' highlights under-recognized artworks and challenges the erasure of Black wartime history. Her work has contributed to fields such as diaspora studies and she has been involved in various initiatives, including serving on the advisory board of Bloomsbury Academic's Comparative Jewish Literatures series, as well as editorial roles in journals that focus on Jewish historical studies. She has received multiple awards for her research, including the Norman Raab Foundation Fellowship and the Canadian Jewish Literary Award. Casteel continues to teach and inspire students in their understanding of the intersections of literature, art, and history.
