Sarah Ciurysek is a visual artist who explores relationships to the ground, particularly through themes of soil, death, and life. Her work incorporates photography and intersects with audio, film, and textiles, designed to disrupt and refresh the viewer's experience of the ground. In her installations, photographic works are presented in ways that evoke the physical connections to the emotional experiences of artwork. Ciurysek's research addresses overlooked and undervalued subject areas, especially rural sensibilities and women's experiences. She has exhibited her work in Canada, UK, Austria, and South Africa, and has received numerous grants from the Canada Council, Manitoba Arts Council, Winnipeg Arts Council, and Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Raised on a farm in Treaty 8 territory in northern Alberta, she continues her work related to land, studying relationships to place through residencies and exhibitions. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and a Master of Fine Arts from Parsons New School for Design in collaboration with Concordia University.
