Biography

Professor Sarah Jacoby specializes in Asian Religions with a focus on Tibetan Buddhism. She received her B.A. from Yale University in Women's Studies and both her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia’s Department of Religious Studies. Joining Northwestern University in 2009 after a postdoctoral fellowship with the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University, her research interests span a range of topics including Indo-Tibetan Buddhist doctrine and ritual practices, gender and sexuality studies, and Tibetan literature. Her significant publication, 'Love Liberation: Autobiographical Writings of the Tibetan Buddhist Visionary Sera Khandro,' won the 2016 E. Gene Smith Book Prize from the Association for Asian Studies. Jacoby has co-organized workshops and lectures, such as the Tibetan translation workshop and the Khyentse Foundation Buddhist Studies Lecture Series. Her teaching accolades include recognition on the ASG Faculty Honor Roll and receiving the Searle Center Advanced Learning and Teaching Innovation Grant. Her courses address critical themes in Buddhism, with an emphasis on gender and cultural studies.
