Biography

Sarah Larney is an Associate Professor at the Department of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine at the University of Montreal. She obtained her PhD from the University of New South Wales in Australia in 2011 and completed postdoctoral studies at Brown University before returning to the National Drug Alcohol Research Center at UNSW. Her research focuses on the health and well-being of individuals with opioid use disorders and people who inject drugs, particularly regarding Hepatitis C virus infection, interactions with the criminal justice system, and the epidemiology and prevention of mortality within these populations. Much of her research is primarily aimed at the outcomes of opioid agonist treatment, especially among incarcerated individuals and, recently, older adults receiving treatment for opioid use disorders. Dr. Larney has published 90 articles in scientific journals such as The Lancet, JAMA Psychiatry, and the American Journal of Public Health. Her work has impacted access to opioid agonist treatment in correctional settings in Australia and the United States, influencing changes to guidelines from the Federal Bureau of Prisons regarding Hepatitis C screening in correctional facilities. She provides recommendations to the United Nations Strategic Advisory Group on Injecting Drug Use and HIV regarding harm reduction measures and is frequently invited to present on the global epidemiology of Hepatitis C among people who inject drugs.
