Sarah Lebeis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant, Soil Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University. She earned her B.S. at Michigan State University in 2002, followed by a Ph.D. from Emory University in 2008. After completing her doctorate, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, from 2009 to 2014. Her research primarily focuses on the interactions between plants and their microbial communities, specifically in understanding how these interactions influence plant microbiome assembly and stability. Her lab utilizes model systems such as Arabidopsis thaliana to investigate the impact of plants on microbial community composition and the associated effects on growth and health. Current studies explore microbial chemotaxis in relation to root exudates and the survival of microbes in the presence of plant-produced phenolic compounds. Lebeis leads efforts at the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, concentrating on bioenergy crop productivity and microbiome interactions.
