Dr. Sarah Schoenmaekers

Biography

Sarah Schoenmaekers is a professor of European Economic Law at Maastricht University and a professor of Construction Law at UHasselt. She is the Director of the Master's programs at the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University. Her expertise spans European Economic Law broadly, with a specific focus on European public procurement law, the Law on Free Movement, and the interplay between European Economic Law and culture. She also has a keen interest in European competition law. Schoenmaekers graduated from the European Law School at Maastricht University in 2005 and became a lawyer in Belgium. In 2010, she defended her thesis entitled 'The Regulation Architects Belgium Netherlands: Comparative Analysis.' Since 2009, she has been part of Maastricht University, becoming an assistant professor in 2013, an associate professor in 2021, and a full professor in 2025. She coordinated the Master's programs in International Laws and European Law School and has published extensively in European Economic Law. Schoenmaekers has received external funding and has been recognized with a Jean Monnet module for creating a course on State Aid and Public Procurement in the EU. She speaks frequently at international conferences and has presented at the European Parliament and other global venues.
