Biography

Sarah Seo is a Professor of Law at NYU School of Law. She earned her AB and PhD in History from Princeton University and her JD from Columbia Law School. Professor Seo specializes in Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Legal History. Her 2019 book, 'Policing the Open Road: How Cars Transformed American Freedom,' was recognized by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the 'Ten History Books of 2019' and has been cited in judicial opinions. The book has received numerous accolades, including the Order Coif Book Award and the Littleton-Griswold Prize from the American Historical Association. In addition to her academic publications, Seo has written for popular outlets such as The Atlantic, Le Monde Diplomatique, and The New York Review of Books. Before joining NYU, she was the Michael Sovern Professor of Law at Columbia Law School, the Daniel P.S. Paul Visiting Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard Law School, and an Associate Professor of Law at Iowa Law School. Seo also clerked for Judge Denny Chin in the Southern District of New York and Judge Reena Raggi at the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and she has practiced at an international law firm as a pro bono lawyer.
