Sarah Thomas joined Brown's faculty in 2013. She focuses on contemporary Iberian fiction film, with a secondary interest in Latin American cinema. Her research is particularly concerned with literature, cinema, and visual culture in emerging post-dictatorship societies, as well as the representation of subjectivity, temporality, and space. Her interests encompass translation studies, gender and sexuality studies, and literary film theory. Thomas has published extensively on film and fiction in Spain, Peru, and Argentina. Notably, her book, 'Inhabiting In-Between: Childhood Cinema Spain's Long Transition', was published in 2019 by University of Toronto Press in its Iberic series, with a Spanish edition set for release in 2024. She is currently engaged in an article-based project about representations of female subjectivity and crisis in contemporary Iberian cinema, as well as a co-written monograph with Prof. María Rosón on imaginaries of female incarceration during the Franco dictatorship. Her work has been recognized with various grants from organizations including PEN America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
