Dr. Sarah Walmsley

Biography

Sarah Walmsley is a Wellcome Senior Clinical Fellow and a practicing Respiratory Physician at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Inflammation Research. Her research focuses on how immune cells, particularly neutrophils, detect and respond to changes in oxygen and nutrient levels, which is critical for understanding and treating lung diseases. By studying neutrophil metabolism and their behavior in response to hypoxic conditions, she aims to uncover new therapeutic strategies to control inflammation and improve patient outcomes in conditions such as COPD and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). After obtaining her PhD through the MRC Training Fellowship at the University of Cambridge, she transitioned to the University of Sheffield, where she was awarded the Wellcome Intermediate Clinical Fellowship. This career trajectory enabled her to develop a robust research program under the mentorship of Professor Moira Whyte. Walmsley's work has significantly contributed to the understanding of neutrophilic inflammation as a central pathological feature in various important respiratory diseases.
