Dr. Sarah Whiting

Biography

Sarah M. Whiting is the Dean and Josep Lluís Sert Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. She became Dean in July 2019, previously serving as Dean of the School of Architecture at Rice University from 2010 to 2019. Whiting has taught at various esteemed institutions, including Princeton University, the University of Kentucky, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Florida. Alongside her academic roles, she is the co-founder and design principal of WW Architecture, an acclaimed firm. Before establishing WW Architecture, she gained experience working with notable firms, such as Office for Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam, Peter Eisenman in New York, and Michael Graves in Princeton, New Jersey. Whiting’s research encompasses a broad interdisciplinary scope within the built environment, with a focus on the intricate relationship between architecture and the socio-political landscape. She has authored significant works featured in prominent journals and edited collections and served on several editorial boards. Notably, she received her Bachelor of Arts from Yale University, a Master of Architecture from Princeton University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in History and Theory of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
