Biography

Sarah Young began her academic journey studying Russian literature, developing a deep interest after an early encounter with Gogol's works. She earned her Bachelor's degree (Honours) at Trinity College, Cambridge, followed by a Master's in European Languages and Culture at the University of Manchester. Her PhD, supervised by Malcolm Jones at the University of Nottingham, culminated in a thesis on the significance of character in Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot,' which later became her book, 'Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot': Ethical Foundations of Narrative.' Young held a Leverhulme Special Early-Career Research Fellowship at the University of Nottingham from 2001 to 2003, and she has taught at various institutions including the University of Leeds and the University of Toronto, where she focused on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian literature and social thought. Since joining the Russian Department at University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies in September 2007, her research has centered on narratives of prison, hard labour, and exile in Russia, resulting in numerous articles and the book 'Writing Resistance: Revolutionary Memoirs from Shlissel'burg Prison, 1884-1906' published by UCL Press in 2021. Sarah is also involved in various online projects related to her research.
