Biography

Satnam Virdee joined the University of Glasgow in 2001 as a Professor of Sociology, specializing in Sociological & Cultural Studies. He previously held a lectureship at the University of Strathclyde from 1998 to 2001 and served as a senior fellow at the Policy Studies Institute in London from 1992 to 1998. His research is focused on the entangled histories of capitalism, class, and racism through the lens of historical sociology. Virdee employs a longue durée and conjunctural modes of analysis, examining counter-hegemonic social movements that challenge structural inequalities and deepen processes of democratization and social justice. He has authored seven books, including "Britain in Fragments: Why Things are Falling Apart" and "Racism, Class and the Racialized Outsider." Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2023 and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2018, Virdee is currently working on a book titled "Catastrophe Utopia," to be published by the University of California Press. His work has been translated into multiple languages, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German, highlighting his international impact on sociology and related fields.
