Dr. Satyabrata Kar

Biography

Satyabrata Kar is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, specializing in neurodegenerative diseases. His research primarily focuses on Alzheimer’s disease, investigating the root causes of this devastating condition, particularly the roles of neuritic plaques and amyloid peptides in neuronal death. Dr. Kar received his PhD from Hammersmith Hospital, University of London, and completed his post-doctoral training at Douglas Hospital, McGill University. He is an active faculty member in the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases at the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute. His research has garnered various funding awards, including a Commonwealth Scholarship, Chercheur-Boursier awards, and support from the Alberta Heritage Foundation. He has also been recognized with Tier Canada Research Chair awards funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr. Kar has published extensively in noteworthy journals, highlighting his contributions to understanding the mechanisms of neurodegeneration and potential therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease. Beyond his research, he is committed to educating the next generation, offering training for undergraduate and graduate students in this critical field.
