Biography

Professor Rappaport joined MIT Department of Physics as an Assistant Professor in 1969 and became a full Professor in 1981. From 1993 to 1995, he served as the Head of the Astrophysics Division before retiring in 2010. He received his AB from Temple University in 1963 and his PhD from MIT in 1968. Over the years, he has focused his research on theoretical studies concerning the formation, evolution, and population synthesis of binary systems that contain collapsed stars. His work has contributed significantly to our understanding of compact objects, binaries, multiple-star systems, exoplanets, disintegrating ultra-short period asteroids, and exocomets.
