Biography

Scott Barley is an artist-filmmaker and Teaching Fellow in Film Directing at Edinburgh College of Art. His filmography focuses on creating sensorial contemplative experiences that challenge traditional anthropocentric narrative structures. Recurrent themes in his work include nature, darkness, visible absence, cosmology, phenomenology, and mysticism. Over the past decade, Scott has embraced a radically independent approach to filmmaking, transitioning to filming primarily with iPhone along with integrating paintings and drawings into his work. His feature film, Sleep House (2017), received the Jury Award at the Film Fronteira International Documentary & Experimental Film Festival in Brazil and has been recognized in several prestigious film critiques, including being cited by film historian Dr. Nicole Brenez in a list of the ten most significant films of the decade. Barley’s work has been exhibited globally at notable venues such as MoMA and the Venice Biennale. Recently, Scott collaborated with musician Hara Alonso on the short film Ladder, commissioned by Canal180 and set to premiere in 2025. As an educator, he teaches and supervises students within the BA Film program, emphasizing the interrelationship between theory and practice, and advocates for environmentally sustainable methodologies in filmmaking. Scott also contributes to mentorship programs and has taught internationally at various institutions.
