Scott Biering is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He completed his undergraduate degrees at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), working in laboratories investigating entry mechanisms of Nipah virus. He received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Chicago, where he researched antiviral mechanisms involving interferons and autophagy proteins. Following his Ph.D., he pursued postdoctoral studies as an Open Philanthropy Fellow at the Life Sciences Research Foundation in the laboratory of Dr. Eva Harris at UC Berkeley, focusing on mechanisms of flavivirus and coronavirus pathogenesis. In 2023, he joined the faculty of the Department of Molecular Biology at UCSD. His research interests include understanding how emerging and re-emerging viruses disrupt physiological barriers to establish infection and lead to pathogenesis. His lab aims to identify general principles of viral pathogenesis, develop therapeutic strategies against viral infections, and explore host defense mechanisms.
