Scott Biering is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of California, San Diego. He received his undergraduate degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he worked in the laboratories of Dr. Benhur Lee and Dr. Hector Aguilar-Carreno, focusing on entry mechanisms of Nipah virus. He then obtained his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Chicago, studying antiviral mechanisms involving interferons and autophagy proteins in Dr. Seungmin Hwang's lab. Following his doctoral studies, he pursued postdoctoral research as an Open Philanthropy Fellow at the Life Sciences Research Foundation in the lab of Dr. Eva Harris at the University of California, Berkeley, investigating the mechanisms of flavivirus and coronavirus pathogenesis. In 2023, he joined the Molecular Biology faculty at UCSD, where his research aims to identify and characterize the general principles of viral pathogenesis, particularly focusing on host-virus interactions and physiological barriers that viruses traverse to establish infection and transmission.
