Dr. Scott Cummings

Biography

Scott Cummings is the Robert Henigson Professor of Legal Ethics at UCLA School of Law, where he has been a faculty member since 2002. He specializes in legal profession, legal ethics, access to justice, and local government law. Cummings has received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and has served as the founding faculty director of the UCLA Program on Legal Ethics and Democracy. He has been involved in empirical research and programming addressing the challenges faced by lawyers in the 21st century. Cummings was selected as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the European University Institute in 2021 and received the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2023 for his study on the role of lawyers in democratic backsliding. His publications include influential works such as "Lawyers Movements: Legal Mobilization Transformative" and "Global Pro Bono: Causes, Consequences Contestation." Cummings has written extensively on social justice and lawyering, and his articles have appeared in leading law reviews. He began his legal career in Los Angeles working with community groups to promote economic opportunity and political empowerment, receiving a Skadden Fellowship in 1998 for his work with Public Counsel.
