Biography

Scott Hanenberg is an Assistant Professor in Music Theory at the College of Arts & Architecture. He has a forthcoming PhD from the University of Toronto and holds a Master's and Bachelor's degree from the same institution and Queen’s University, respectively. His engagement in the academic community includes being on the Standing Committee for LGBTQ+ Issues for the Society for Music Theory, where he has served from 2023 to 2026. Furthermore, he was the Secretary of the Music Theory Society Mid-Atlantic from 2022 to 2023 and has been involved with GAMUT as a member of the Editorial Board from 2021 to 2023. His previous roles also include Secretary for the Committee on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at Virginia Tech’s School of Performing Arts from 2019 to 2023 and participation in the Program Committee for the Music Theory Society Mid-Atlantic. Hanenberg's research interests focus on rhythm, meter, and groove in popular music, as well as cognitive access tools for gaming environments such as Dungeons & Dragons, showcasing his versatile engagement with music theory and its applications in contemporary contexts.
