Biography

Scott Harrison is a terrestrial ecologist interested in applying the concepts of ecological resilience and Adaptive Management to improve the sustainable use of natural resources. His research focuses on wildlife ecosystems and the support of wildlife populations. Scott studied a variety of species, particularly large carnivores, and dynamics within predator-prey systems. His landscape-level research includes comparative treatments that provide field data supporting quantitative population models within an Adaptive Management framework, enabling decision-makers to test the effects of resource-use scenarios. He assists practitioners in applying ecological research to land-use decisions and co-edited the book 'Conservation Biology Principles Forested Landscapes'. Scott has conducted fieldwork across British Columbia and part of his post-doctoral studies at the University of Oxford, providing guidance and assistance for numerous projects across five continents. To enrich his ecological research, Scott incorporates his experiences in business and government to examine a suite of ecological, economic, and social opportunities and constraints that drive resource use decisions. In government, he worked in research, operational, and policy units at the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. In the business sector, Scott focused on Environmental Risk Management to improve corporate sustainability performance. He served as a Liaison Delegate for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, a global CEO-led organization with 200 leading businesses accelerating the transition to a sustainable world. Scott is the lead author of Chapter 2 in the book 'Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity for Business and Enterprise', a project sponsored by the United Nations outlining the economic benefits provided to corporations by biodiversity and ecosystem services.
