Biography

Scott Nethersole is a Professor of Art History at Radboud University, specializing in the history of art and architecture from 500 to 1500 CE. His research focuses on the visual world of the fifteenth century, particularly the late medieval and early Renaissance Italy, as well as pre-colonial Africa. He is particularly interested in the visual traces of contact between Africans and Europeans. Nethersole is currently engaged in several projects that include a study of contact from the African perspective within art history, a significant exhibition coinciding with the years of Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael in Florence, and a monograph on Florentine sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. He has authored works such as 'Art Violence in Early Renaissance Florence' and 'Art in Renaissance Florence: City and Legacy.' He previously held positions at the Courtauld Institute of Art and the National Gallery in London, with notable fellowships at the British Museum and Harvard University’s Center for Italian Renaissance Studies. His teaching includes relevant ancillary activities related to his expertise in Italian Renaissance Art.
