Biography

Dr. Scott Ryan began his neuroscience training at the University of Ottawa under the supervision of Dr. Steffany Bennett. During his graduate studies, he contributed to developing a systems-based method for studying lipid messengers in neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. After completing his PhD in Biochemistry in 2009, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, focusing on neurodegenerative disease and how cytoskeleton modulation impacts organelle function and axonal transport in conditions like Dystonia and Multiple Sclerosis. In 2011, he moved to La Jolla, California, to continue his postdoctoral work at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. Supported by Parkinson’s Society Canada, he studied mitochondrial dynamics and their role in Parkinson's etiology, utilizing patient-derived stem cell models. Dr. Ryan joined the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph in 2014, where he has focused on the cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. His research incorporates high-resolution imaging and biochemical analysis to better understand and potentially treat Parkinson's disease. Currently, as a Full Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Dr. Ryan's work aims to elucidate structural changes in the protein alpha-synuclein to refine diagnosis and prognosis for Parkinson’s disease patients.
