Dr. Scott Silliman

Biography

Scott L. Silliman is Professor Emeritus at Duke University School of Law, where he has been a significant figure in the fields of national security law and military law. He held leadership roles such as the Executive Director of the Center on Law, Ethics, and National Security since its inception in 1993, and was appointed Director Emeritus in July 2011. His notable career includes service as a federal appellate judge on the United States Court of Military Commission Review, where he was sworn in on September 12, 2012, after being nominated by President Obama. Silliman's educational background includes a B.A. in Philosophy and a J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also served his country as an active-duty judge advocate in the Air Force, retiring as a Colonel after 25 years of service. His legal expertise encompasses oversight roles in significant military operations during the Persian Gulf War and engagements as a lecturer on military law and national security issues for various media outlets including CNN and National Public Radio.
