Biography

Scott Soo is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, specializing in modern history with a focus on conflict, migration, and commemoration. His research examines the legacies of forced displacement, particularly in relation to the Spanish Civil War refugees in France. His DPhil traced the experiences and memories of these refugees, resulting in the monograph 'Routes of Exile: France and the Spanish Civil War Refugees, 1939-2009', published by Manchester University Press in 2013. Soo's work analyzes the impact of the mass exodus of 1939 and the subsequent internment of refugees in French camps, as well as their representation in contemporary commemorative practices. He is a member of the Editorial Board for the journal 'Diasporas. Circulations, Migrations, Histoire' and has served on various academic boards, including the Centre d’Archives et d’Etudes sur les Migrations Ibériques at the Université de Toulouse. His teaching encompasses multiple aspects of French and European history, and he welcomes inquiries from PhD students interested in French culture, history, and the legacies of the Spanish Civil War.
