Biography

Scott Watson received a BA in History and an MA in Political Science from the University of Waterloo, followed by a PhD from the University of British Columbia in 2006. He joined the University of Victoria in 2006 as a Professor and Undergraduate Director. His teaching encompasses courses on international relations, security studies, nationalism, ethnic conflict, and ethics in world politics. Watson's research interests center around the social construction of security threats, national insecurity particularly in the realm of migration, and the roles that various actors play in these processes. He has published two monographs: 'Securitization Humanitarian Migration' in 2009 and 'International Order Politics Disaster' in 2020. Watson's current research includes re-conceptualizing human security, examining the relationship between mass media and the construction of insecurity, and exploring the roles of private corporations in these dynamics. He is also a faculty advisor for the World University Service of Canada at UVic.
