Biography

Sean Bechhofer graduated in 1988 with a degree in Mathematics and later pursued post-graduate work on Category Theory, Type Theory, and Logic at the University of Manchester. In 1992, he began working with ICL on a project to develop an object-oriented front-end for a network database-based software development environment, utilizing the Eiffel programming language. Bechhofer joined the Medical Informatics Group in November 1993, becoming part of the Information Management Group in 1997. From 1993 to 2004, he served as a Research Associate on various European and national projects, including COHSE, WonderWeb, OntoWeb, and KnowledgeWeb. In 2004, he was appointed as a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science, where he teaches multiple course units. He has developed and delivered tutorials on Description Logics, Ontology Engineering, and Knowledge Representation Languages. Bechhofer has served as the Discipline Head for Education in Computer Science from 2019 until the end of 2023. His research work is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on the contribution of his work towards digital futures and data science.
