Dr. Sean Canty

Biography

Sean Canty is an Associate Professor of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design where he coordinates Core Design Studios and offers courses in design media techniques. His work explores the capacity of architectural form to reorganize spatial norms and enhance social life, with a focus on everyday materials and novel geometries. As the founder of Studio Sean Canty, he leads an independent architecture practice in Cambridge, MA, emphasizing a design approach that integrates drawing, model-making, and immersive visualization to create dynamic spatial experiences. Canty is also a co-founder of Office III, a collaborative design collective with offices in New York, San Francisco, and Cambridge. His studio's notable design includes a finalist entry for the 2016 MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art and the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale. Canty's writing has appeared in several prestigious publications, such as Harvard Design Magazine and Domus. He has received numerous accolades, including the 2023 Arts and Letters Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the 2023 Architectural League Prize. He holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard GSD and a Bachelor of Architecture from California College of the Arts.
